MakerSpace Series: Introduction to the Creative Media Studio [Re-Run]

Thank you for attending the briefing sessions conducted in October 2019. We have received positive feedback and will be organizing two more sessions in November 2019. Please feel free to join.  The briefing session will demonstrate the use of equipment and facilities in the Creative Media Studio to enable you to easily create your own video content.

MakerSpace Series: Virtual Reality (VR) Experience Sessions

The Library has acquired the following VR Head-Mounted Display (HMD). You can join the experience session and try out the devices.
  • HTC Focus Plus
  • HTC Vive pro
  • Oculus Quest

Reminder:
  • Virtual Reality headsets are not suitable for people who are pregnant, experience motion sickness, high blood pressure, heart conditions, epileptic symptoms, binocular vision abnormalities, and suffer from claustrophobia and/or dizziness.
  • Don’t use the headset for more than 15 minutes at one time. Take a break.
  • Stop immediately if you experience loss of awareness, dizziness, headache etc.

Introduction to IoT for Non-programmer

·   The workshop “Introduction to IoT for Non-programmer” was held successfully last Wednesday at the MakerSpace, Learning Garden, LG/F University Library. Thank you to Prof. Bernard Suen for teaching us the basic concepts of Internet of Things (IoT). We learnt how to transfer program code to the Micro:bit and how to use  sensors available on the Micro:bit board.


The Micro:bit board will be available to borrow at the Learning Garden HelpDesk soon.

Introduction to HTML5 Web Animation for Non-programmer

The Library held a successful workshop “Introduction to HTML5 Web Animation for Non-programmer” last Friday. Thank you to Prof. Bernard Suen for teaching us how to use the free software Hippani Animator to create web animations. We spent a fun afternoon  learning  how to create a simple animation and how to upload it to the Web.

  • Host your website for Free on Github
  • Use Airtable for data management, analysis and tracking
  • Display data query results in Calendar, Kanban, Gallery and Form views
  • Sharing Airtable data and views with others
  • Master Bootstrap web templates and Pingendo 2 for web design and publishing
  • Chart your data with Data-wrapper
  • Set up Google Analytics for website tracking
  • Analyse site traffic to study audience, acquisition, behaviour and conversion

  • The demise of Flash animation on the web
  • Why develop HTML 5 animation using Hippani Animator?
  • Understand the Hippani Animator workspace
  • Create and edit an object and add it to the library
  • Create movement using the timeline and frames
  • Add sound, image, and text to the animation
  • Create a film loop and control animation playback using buttons and pre-built scripts
  • Export Hippani animation to HTML

Workshop 3: Introduction to IoT for Non-programmer
  • What is IoT? Why should people bother to know about it?
  • Why using Micro:bit for learning IoT?
  • Power up the Micro:bit for connection to a computer
  • Communicate with Micro:bit through visual programming
  • Transfer program code to the Micro:bit
  • Learn to use sensors available on the Micro:bit board (light, temperature, accelerometer, and compass)
  • Control button and LED
  • Connect Micro:bit to smartphone and Internet for data communication
